Theatres in Scarborough...

The Stephen Joseph Theatre moved to its present home in the 1990's. The original theatre was founded in 1955 by Stephen Joseph who created a 'theatre-in-the-round' at the library. In 1976 the theatre moved to a tempory home on the ground floor of the former Scarborough Boys High School. It wasn't until 1988 when the Odean Cinema closed that a suitable location was found.

 

The new theatre has 2 auditoria. The 'Round' has 404 seats and continues the 'theatre-in-the-round' tradition. The McCarthy is a 165 end stage/ cinema. Internationally acclaimed playright Sir Alan Ayckbourn premiers his latest plays here, attracting visitors from all over the UK and beyond. more

 

Scarborough Open Air Theatre is simply unique! A huge outdoor theatre with 6,500 permanent stadium seats set in a valley with a small lake between the seating and the stage. The Open Air Theatre has recently played host to stars like JLS, Olly Murs, N-Dubz, Russell Watson, Dionne Warwick, Jose Carreras & Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. MORE

The Futurist Theatre on Scarborough's South Bay Seafront is a huge indoor auditorium with 2,150 seats.

 

Sadly, the theatre faces demolition in the near future.

The Spa Theatre is part of The Spa Complex, a huge entertainment hub in Scarborough's South Bay. The theatre itself has seating for 570 and sits next door to The Grand Hall. Also at The Spa is the Ocean Room, Suncourt and Vita Dome.

The YMCA Theatre has been supporting young people in Scarborough for many years. The YMCA has a very well-equipped 290-seat theatre which plays host to numerous productions each year.  It's also ideal for companies or groups wishing to deliver a seminar, training session or presentation to a large group in comfort.
