7. WHEN TO SEEK HELP
Help our stewards to help you
Scarborough Cricket club wants every spectator to have a really good day at North Marine Road. However if you do encounter a problem, please talk to the stewards. After every match, the Club receives correspondence from Members and other spectators regarding matters which could –and should –have been dealt with promptly and appropriately on the day. Whatever the issue, please don’t suffer in silence.
Wait until a break in play to leave or return to your seat
Movement whilst an over is in progress is probably the commonest single subject raised by Members and spectators, yet it is one of the trickier issues for stewards to have to deal with. By the time an incident has occurred, it is too late to have prevented it and the behaviour often becomes contagious within the vicinity. Please be considerate of your fellow spectators by waiting until the end of the over or suitable break in play before vacating or returning to your seat.

The sixth and final work of the Wild Eye series is a new Seawatching Station featuring a permanent artwork commission by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller – launches this Saturday 26th April. Located on Marine Drive – one of the best spots on the English coast for observing dolphins and porpoises, with over 350 sightings in the past year – the Seawatching Station offers free telescopes and comprehensive wildlife information, providing insight into the area’s remarkable marine life. Deller’s new artwork, Roman Mosaic c. 2025, created in collaboration with sculptor and mosaic artist Coralie Turpin, is an integral part of the Seawatching Station. This large-scale, fragmentary Roman-style floor mosaic is inspired by Scarborough’s marine life and Roman heritage. Roman Mosaic c. 2025 has been developed in consultation with local scientists, conservationists, archaeologists and community groups and builds on Jeremy Deller’s long-standing fascination with cultural history. The facility is free to enjoy and will be accessible 24/7.

A new event celebrating world cuisine and handcrafted goods is set to attract thousands of visitors to Scarborough next weekend. Bringing a mix of international flavours, artisan products and family-friendly entertainment, the Scarborough Food and Drink Festival will be held at the town’s Open Air Theatre on 12 and 13 April. Featuring 50 independent stallholders, the two-day free event offers everything from Yorkshire crumbles and artisan cheese to locally made spirits and indulgent sweet treats. Assistant director for culture and leisure, Jo Ireland said: “This exciting new event is another fantastic example of how we’re expanding our year-round offer for local people and visitors. “By hosting the festival at the Open Air Theatre, we’re creating a platform for local and national traders, attracting more visitors and strengthening Scarborough’s reputation as a must-visit destination.” Among the traders which will be at the festival is Crofts Chocolates, based in the town and run by Alex Grant and his mother, Sheila. She said: “Local events are key to reaching new customers and staying connected with our community. We’ve been making chocolates with love since 2013 and events like this help small businesses like ours to grow. We’re looking forward to meeting new faces in Scarborough.” It is hoped the festival will boost the local economy by attracting visitors earlier in the tourist season. Last year Scarborough Open Air Theatre generated £8.5 million for the economic benefit of the town, and this new event aims to build on that success by extending its programme into the off-peak months and helping to drive even more interest to the traditional seaside town. Latest figures have shown that the tourism sector itself provides an annual economic boost of £561 million to the Scarborough area, attracting 3.8 million visitors a year and supporting more than 5,600 jobs. The new event also complements Filey Food Festival, which returns this year with events on 19 and 20 April, 7 and 8 June, August 9 and 10 and 11 and 12 October.

Scarborough’s spectacular Armed Forces Day will have an added poignancy this summer as it is staged during the year that the nation commemorates the 80th anniversary of VE Day, our chief executive has said. The event is hosted by ourselves as part of the our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant and takes place 100 days from today (March 20). While Armed Forces Day takes place on 28 June, the actual anniversary of Victory in Europe Day – which saw the Allies accept Germany’s unconditional surrender in World War Two – will be marked a month earlier on 8 May. However, this year’s Armed Forces Day will have an added resonance, especially as the county is home to so many members of the services. North Yorkshire has more than 12,000 people who work for the Ministry of Defence and 3,000 children from service families in schools. Our chief executive, Richard Flinton, said: “It is a privilege to host Armed Forces Day in Scarborough, especially during the year that the nation marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day. “As well as providing spectacular entertainment for all those gathered, it also presents an opportunity for us to reflect on the incredible sacrifices made by men and women to secure the freedoms we can often take for granted. “Being home to Catterick Garrison and the likes of RAF Leeming, all who live and work in North Yorkshire know the invaluable role played by those who serve in our Armed Forces, and it is fitting that we pay tribute to them in this way.” Thousands of people are expected to gather at Scarborough’s South Bay in June and preparations are well underway. The free event will see the skies above graced by a variety of thrilling aerobatic displays. The highlight will be an appearance by the world-famous Red Devils parachute display team. An elite unit of the Parachute Regiment, the Red Devils showcase the immense capabilities of the Army’s paratroopers to audiences across the world, performing more than 350 tandem skydives and 60 parachute displays every year. Further attractions will be announced in coming weeks, plus there will also be colourful parades, land-based displays, musical performances and family activities. Scarborough’s Armed Forces Day will be sponsored by the Skipton Building Society. The society’s chief executive, Stuart Haire, said: “Skipton Building Society is proud to be sponsoring this year’s Armed Forces Day in Scarborough. As proud signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant, we recognise the invaluable contribution made to our country by service personnel, veterans and their families. "Since 1853, Skipton Building Society has been committed to looking after the people and communities we serve, and Scarborough remains an important part of our network. We look forward to being a part of this important annual event for the town and sharing it with the people of Scarborough and thousands of visitors.”

Thousands of motorcycle fans are expected to converge on Scarborough next weekend for the annual Goldwing Light Parade. Fans of the legendary Honda motorcycle will parade their machines, decked out in neon lights, along Marine Drive in the seaside resort on Saturday 14 September. With our help, organisers have put together a full day’s worth of free entertainment, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at 9.30pm. Before the evening's parade there will be a static display of motorcycles, running from noon to 4pm, on West Pier. During this time, the Charter Mayor of Scarborough, Cllr Janet Jefferson, will judge the best bike and donations will be collected in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance charity. Cllr Jefferson, who represents Castle Division in the town, said: “We really look forward to welcoming the bikers to Scarborough for this annual event. It will not be easy judging the best bike as the owners take such pride in their machinery. I would encourage everyone to come down during the day and at night when the bikes will provide a spectacular sight travelling along the seafront.” Riders will begin to gather for the evening parade from 6.30pm, with the cavalcade starting at 8pm. Riders will head south along the foreshore to the roundabout. From there the procession turns back along Foreshore Road and around Marine Drive, looping at Peasholm Park and returning to West Pier, South Bay. Organiser, Danielle Reed, said: “This year’s event will be a great day out for all the family. During the day visitors can inspect the bikes, take photos and meet the riders before darkness falls and the lights go on. "The parade is magical with the bikes lit up, music and fancy dress before we finish off with a stunning firework display all raising money for a fabulous cause.”
