Scarborough’s Brunswick Centre will officially close to the public on 17 September 2025. This marks a major milestone in Scarborough Group's plans to redevelop the site into SQ1, a vibrant new town centre destination. The closure includes the multi-storey car park and public conveniences, as the building will no longer be accessible while preparatory works for redevelopment are underway. Signage will be in place to direct visitors to alternative nearby facilities, including parking at Falconers Road, St Nicholas Parade, and The Palm Court, and public toilets on Foreshore Road. The Brunswick Centre has been a familiar presence in Scarborough’s town centre for more than three decades. Its closure marks an important step toward major new investment in the town, making way for SQ1, a new destination shaped by Scarborough’s character and future ambitions. The redevelopment will attract more visitors and deliver long-term benefits for local people, businesses and the wider community. The closure aligns with the end of the service charge year and follows a period of gradual wind-down, during which they have supported a planned transition by allowing leases to naturally expire and offering flexibility to our longer-term tenants. Many occupiers, including The Fragrance Shop, Holland & Barrett, Toyland and Nomination, have successfully relocated within Scarborough, helping to retain popular brands locally and breathe new life into previously vacant units. The company say they are also pleased that Next is relocating to a larger store on Seamer Road. All tenants have received appropriate notice and support from the company throughout the process. While no businesses within the Brunswick Centre will remain open during construction, Poundland, which is located in a separate building, will continue to trade as normal. Scarborough Group are proud to be leading the redevelopment as part of a broader programme of long-term investment in the town. Mark Jackson, Project Lead said: “The closure of Brunswick is a major step forward, not just for the project, but for the wider regeneration of Scarborough. While change can be disruptive in the short term, this marks the start of a much-needed transformation that will help the town centre match the strength of its visitor appeal. “Scarborough already attracts over 23 million visits a year and outperforms major cities in dwell time and year-round tourism. The challenge has been keeping people in the town centre for longer, and that’s what SQ1 will help deliver. “This is about more than buildings. It’s about reimagining the heart of the town and creating a place where people want to spend time, whether they live here, work here or are visiting for the first time.” For updates, follow @SQ1scarb on social media.

The Nao Victoria left Seville in 1519 and returned to the same city in 1522, having successfully sailed across three oceans and along the edge of four continents. Residents and visitors are now set to be given the opportunity to come onboard a replica of the iconic vessel and hear how its crew helped change the course of maritime history under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano. The Nao Victoria’s arrival follows the Galeón Andalucía’s successful stay last summer, which attracted thousands of families to the town. The vessel’s visit has been funded by Visit North Yorkshire, the countywide organisation which is part of North Yorkshire Council and that is dedicated to promoting and driving tourism in the county. The tourism industry contributes £4 billion every year to the visitor economy and supports 38,000 jobs across the county. Visitors can step onboard the Nao Victoria between 10am and 8pm every day between Thursday, 26 June and Sunday, 6 July. Families can take a self-guided tour of the decks, discovering more about the historical and social context that led to one of the greatest maritime feats in the history of navigation. Brighton can claim to be the UK's best beach based on Tripadvisor reviews. But as we all know, you can't make a decent sandcastle on a pebble beach! Residents, businesses, voluntary groups and council staff have come together to boost civic pride, revitalise run-down areas and encourage more people to visit Scarborough. North Yorkshire Council have teamed up with local people and organisations for a significant programme of improvement work in Scarborough, ahead of the busy summer season. The initiative follows confirmation from the Government that the area will receive almost £20 million as part of a national programme of investment in towns. Previously known as the Long-Term Plan for Towns, it has been rebranded as the Plan for Neighbourhoods with an expanded remit to improve health and wellbeing along with work, productivity and skills. NYC carried out a consultation process called ‘Let’s Talk Scarborough’ to identify people’s priorities. More than 60 per cent of respondents thought there was a need for a town centre that looked better, felt safer, and was more welcoming, with tidier shopfronts and well-maintained public spaces. As a result, money was allocated to ensure progress is made in the interim period before proposals under the Plan for Neighbourhoods take shape. In addition to work routinely carried out in the resort, We have allocated over £200,000 to revitalise parts of the town through a range of improvements, including: Investment in state-of-the-art cleaning equipment to tackle problem areas more effectively. Support for community-led activities and initiatives. Brightening spaces with vibrant flower and shrub planting. Provision of a town centre caretaker. Commissioning a large-scale mural to celebrate Scarborough’s identity and create a new town centre landmark. Improving shopfronts and bringing empty units back into use. Installing new litter bins and benches and refreshing existing street furniture. Work is also underway on developing a new town centre design guide to help ensure building improvements and the wider public realm reflect the town’s unique character. The aim is to support high-quality changes that fit in with the town’s look and feel, especially in areas with historic significance.

National Geographic has named its 7 top seaside resorts to visit in 2025 and Scarborough features. This is what they say about Scarborough: "The North Yorkshire town has a decent claim to be Britain’s first seaside resort; health-giving springs discovered here in the early 17th century started the cascade of coastal visitors. But its fall was long and sustained, and the rebound very much a work in progress. The strategy? To woo a diverse crowd with a beyond-eclectic blend of attractions and events, from poetry recitals to punk festivals, while continuing to cater to the deckchaired masses on sun-trap South Bay Beach or Blue Flag North Bay Beach. Why go? The nostalgists will love strolling through the revamped Esplanade and Italian gardens, marvelling at the imposing silhouette of the Grand — the largest hotel in Europe when it was completed in 1867. The century-old ‘OAT’ (Open Air Theatre), which re-opened in 2010, now draws some of the country’s biggest acts, often leaning into nostalgic revivals. A £20 million transformation of the West Pier is also on the horizon, set to breathe new life into the historic waterfront".

The sixth and final work of the Wild Eye series is a new Seawatching Station featuring a permanent artwork commission by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller – launches this Saturday 26th April. Located on Marine Drive – one of the best spots on the English coast for observing dolphins and porpoises, with over 350 sightings in the past year – the Seawatching Station offers free telescopes and comprehensive wildlife information, providing insight into the area’s remarkable marine life. Deller’s new artwork, Roman Mosaic c. 2025, created in collaboration with sculptor and mosaic artist Coralie Turpin, is an integral part of the Seawatching Station. This large-scale, fragmentary Roman-style floor mosaic is inspired by Scarborough’s marine life and Roman heritage. Roman Mosaic c. 2025 has been developed in consultation with local scientists, conservationists, archaeologists and community groups and builds on Jeremy Deller’s long-standing fascination with cultural history. The facility is free to enjoy and will be accessible 24/7.
